Notes: For primeval100 challenge 218: Jess.
Jess took the plain white envelope when Abby handed it to her, glancing at the contents before slipping it quietly into her desk with the others. It was a high bid, but not high enough to win, she thought.
Jess jumped as Lester spoke, discreetly moving to block the drawer but Lester pulled it open and lifted out the pile of envelopes, leaning in closer to whisper,
“Don’t bother, I already know.”
“The disc,” he replied, handing her an envelope. “And I’m only doing it as it’s for charity.”
Yeah, right, she thought, biting back a smile.
Lester sat in his office, watching, as all day long, people handed the plain white envelopes to Jess. He knew what was going on- he was paid to know what they were up to- and he knew he should put a stop to it, but he didn’t.
Instead, he wrote a figure on a piece of paper and slid it into the envelope, going to hand it to her.
When the deadline passed, Lester found himself the proud owner of a disc in a plain plastic case. Slipping it into the DVD player, he smiled.
This was worth every penny.
“Jess! We want a word with you.”
Becker and Matt cut her off as she tried to make a dash for the exit.
“Is it true about the disc?”
Jess grinned. “Not my fault you were shagging in the armoury without switching off the CCTV. Anyway, it was for charity…”
“That’s not the point!” Matt paused and then asked, “How much did it make?”
She told them.
“Bloody hell. Who bought it?”
“I can’t tell you,” she protested, but Becker noticed her eyes flick toward Lester’s office.
He shared a smile with Matt; time to go and tease the boss.
