On thin ice

Becker realised what was going to happen as he unclipped the lead from Moss’s collar and Moss spied the ducks on the pond. He tried to grab him but Moss was already running. Unfortunately for Moss, he couldn’t understand that, being a much heavier than a duck, the ice that they were walking around on wasn’t going to support him.

Becker sighed as Moss ignored his calls, thankful that the pond was shallow enough for Moss to climb back out with only his pride dented.

“He never learns, does he?” Matt commented, going back to the car for a towel.

Animal, vegetable or mineral?

He was frozen to the spot, his gaze firmly locked onto something behind Becker’s shoulder. Unfortunately, Becker was still trying to unstick his boot from the swamp and knew that if he turned to look he’d overbalance. The man’s reaction would be understandable had he been a civilian but he wasn’t; the soldier had come highly recommended and had gone through intensive training. Supposedly.

“Well?” Becker demanded. “What is it?”

“Is it a dinosaur? Man-eating plant? Giant boulder? WHAT? Snap out of it, man!”

If they survived this, Becker thought, he was going to fire the new guy personally.
