Title/Prompt: 87 – Resolutions
Pairing/s: Connor / Becker
“It’s my New year’s Resolution.”
Becker smiled. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
“You don’t think I’ll do it?”
“Do I believe that you’re going to get up every morning and go for a run with me? No, I don’t. I still remember last year, something about giving up junk food, if I recall.”
Connor sighed. “Well, this year I’m going to stick to it.”
Becker got into bed. “Okay, I’ll wake you up at five thirty-”
Connor looked alarmed. “I said I’d go for a run with you; no one mentioned getting up at the crack of dawn!”
Title/Prompt: 97 – Extinction
Pairing/s: Matt / Becker
Becker stared around at the barren landscape. In the distance, he could see the traces of ruined buildings, now nothing more than rubble, partly covered by drifts of sand and earth.
He felt Matt’s presence at his side and saw the other man’s expression as he saw the deserted bunkers in the ground, the hatches torn open.
“Is this where you grew up?” Becker asked.
Matt shook his head, averting his gaze. “No, this is later, though not by much. It looks as though they finally did it. The predators wiped us out.”
Becker reached over and took his hand.
Title/Prompt: 99 – Exanimate
Abby crouched down next to the dead animal lying on the ground. It had come through the anomaly some four hours earlier and had led them a merry chase through the streets while they tried to get it back to the anomaly. Unfortunately, the creature was scared and had begun to panic when surrounded by the strange sights and sounds of a city.
She knew that Becker had no choice but to shoot when the creature had charged at them, injuring one man, but that didn’t make it easier. The poor creature’s only fault had been stepping through that anomaly.
Title/Prompt: 150 – Bedtime stories
“Tell me another one, Uncle Hilary!”
Becker sighed; he’d almost made it to the door that time. Luckily, his brother stepped into the room.
“No more stories; it’s time for bed.”
Piers shook his head. “If you don’t go to sleep, then your Uncle won’t tell you a story next time…”
As they left the room, closing the door behind them, Piers turned to Becker.
“She loves it when you visit. How you think of all those stories about dinosaurs and stuff is beyond me. You should start writing kids’ books!”
Becker didn’t reply, just changed the subject.
Title/Prompt: 129 – Where the heart is
Pairing/s: Jess / Emily
“Do you ever miss it?” Jess asked. “Your home, I mean.”
Emily didn’t even have to think about it. Did she miss the restrictions of her time, placed upon her by her gender? Did she miss her family, who had so readily offered her up as a bride for Henry without any considerations to her feelings?
“No. Why would I miss it, when everything that makes me happy is right here?” Emily replied, smiling as Jess took her hand, tangling their fingers together. “They say that home is where the heart is, and that makes my home here with you.”
Title/Prompt: 171 – The road to hell
Lester could feel a headache coming on.
“So,” he said to Becker. “You decided that it would be a good idea to allow Mr Quinn to go wandering through an anomaly and, as a result of unlocking said anomaly, you allowed a dangerous creature to come through.”
“It wasn’t his fault,” Danny tried to point out, but Lester just glared at him.
“Danny just wanted to put the creature back through- it was just a baby and it wouldn’t have survived on its own,” Becker said. “He had good intentions-”
Lester sighed. “The road to hell is paved with those.”
Title/Prompt: 172 - Revolution
It used to be so simple, Lester thought, back in the days when they were scared of him. He’d order them to do something and they’d do it. Sure, they’d mess it up and cause chaos while they did, but that wasn’t the point. Then he had to go and be nice to them. He could see where it all went wrong; it was when he took Temple in as a lodger. Connor had started treating him differently, arguing, talking to him as a friend. Then the others followed his example. It was unsettling.
Vive le revolution, he thought dryly.
Title/Prompt: 66 – Nick Cutter
Pairing/s: Nick / Ryan
Nick Cutter opened the envelope that had been propped up on his desk opened it. It was a valentines card.
There was no address or postmark on the envelope and so it had to have come from someone within the university. His students were all busily writing, and so he studied the envelope, trying to work out whose handwriting it was.
Nick looked up to see a familiar figure slide quietly into the hall and sit down. The students noticed too, following his gaze and instantly linking the card in his hands to the stranger.
Ryan smiled. He could wait.
Title/Prompt: 105 – Correspondence
Lester picked up the letter on his desk. He had been avoiding opening it since his secretary had brought it to him yesterday, because he knew what it would say. If he didn’t read it, then he could pretend for just a little while longer.
He couldn’t do that forever, though.
“It is the decision of the board that no further rescue missions will be authorised. Abby Maitland, Danny Quinn and Connor Temple have been officially declared missing, presumed dead…”
Lester didn’t read any more, just pushed the letter aside. Just because they believed it, didn’t mean he had to.
